Carreker and Birsh are well known to IDA members through their writings and presentations at branch meetings and annual conferences. This book was written as a companion to Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills, second Edition, edited by Judith Birsh. That book was reviewed in the Winter 2000 edition of Perspectives after it was first published in 1999. The second edition arrived in 2005.
In the 1999 Perspectives' review, I wrote, "Those individuals committed to the approaches derived from the work of OrtonGillingham, will be thrilled to have a text to reinforce their beliefs. Persons who want to know what multisensory teaching is have a way to learn about it.... The book would be an excellent text for students in education learning about multisensory teaching. But it has appeal, as well, to all of us who regard ourselves as students in the study of those who do not learn in a typical way. …
