The Talk of the Town
Produced and directed by George Stevens
Photographed by Ted Tetzlaff, ASC.
(RCA/Columbia Home Video)
Cary Grant is a fugitive harbored by Jean Arthur, Edgar Buchanan, and Ronald Colman. Only Colman, a law professor who has been offered a place on the Supreme Court, doesn't know that Grant is a fugitive.
Screwball comedy with snappy dialogue and a dramatic undertone. Great script by Irwin Shaw and Sidney Buchman. Photography fluctuates from low key to high key in an eccentric way that wouldn't work if it wasn't for the overall structure of the film.
The opening sequence is visually one of the best with Grant in and out of the shadows after escaping from jail.
All About Eve

Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
Photographed by Milton Krasner, ASC.
Starring Bette Devis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Thelma Hitter, and Marilyn Monroe.
Key Video has put the spotlight on Bette Davis for this release of All About Eve, but originally it was Milton Krasner, ASC, who put his spotlight on the star studded cast of this film classic.
Classic is a word used loosely these days. I use it in the case of this film, because in All About Eve, everything works. The acting, the writing, the direction, the glamorous use of black and white cinematography are all dynamic.

The current crop includes the fascinating examination of Man's place in the Universe, Of Stars and Men. Based on Harlow Shapley's book of the same name and narrated by the author, Of Stars and Men is an excellent primer for basic physics.
This is a fun film, which simplifies big ideas into little images that inspire deep thoughts. A pleasant reminder that movies can be educational and fun. …
