The career of John Carpenter seems at times to have turned into a trap for the director who first made a stir in the seventies with Dark 5ier(1974) and Assault on Precinct 13 (1976). While the former was essentially a vehicle for the concerns of screenwriter/actor Dan O'Bannon (concerns he would consummate later on with Alien) the latter was a sideways urban gangwar take on Carpenter's favourite genre, director and movie-the western, Howard Hawks and Rio Bravo respectively.
