Interfaith Initiative

More than twenty-five Muslim American interfaith leaders assembled in Las Vegas on 22-25 Aug. to focus on their vision, experience, and the future of interfaith work. They agreed to establish the American branch of the World Council of Muslims for Interfaith Relations (WCMIR; www.wcmir.org),which already exists at the international level. Dr. Abidullah Ghazi was elected its first president.

The conference, jointly hosted by the Islamic Society of Nevada (ISON) and the WCMIR, was the first such meeting held in America. Interfaith practitioners shared their perspectives and stories. The meeting was opened by Dr. Ikram ullah Khan (chairman of die board of trustees, ISON) and was concluded by Dr. Khalid Khan (president, ISON). Dr. Sulayman Nyang (Howard University), Dr. Irfan Ahmed Khan (founder, WCMIR), Dr. Abidullah Ghazi (Iqra Foundation), Dr. Iftekhar Hai (director, inter- faith relations, United Muslims of America), Dr. Ahmadullah Siddiqi (Western Illinois Uni- versity), Dr. Asiani Abdullah (director, ISON; editor, "The Muslim Observer"), Dr. Aleem Siddiqi (University of Califor- nia, San Diego), Dr. Abdul Hai, Tasnima Fernandez, Waliya Muhammad, Jehan Stanzai, Sherrel Johnson {University of Arkansas), Imam Ali Siddiqi (president, Inter-Faidi Association of Norco-Corona, CA), Dr. Muhammad Shafiq (executive director, Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue, CISD), Noura Amatullah, Azam Nizamuddin (board chairman, Averroes Academy), Dr. Zahid Bukhari (Georgetown University), and Dr. Mustapha Kuku also attended. …
