"The Oracle of Oil" ENERGY ENTREPRENEUR
As the global economy faces continued uncertainty, volatile fuel prices place additional stress on the economies throughout the world. T. Boone Pickens, founder and chairman of BP Capital Management one of the most successful energy-oriented investment firms - and author of The First Billion Is the Hardest, has been proposing a comprehensive approach to address North America's reliance on fossil fuels.
Project management professionals attending PMI Global Congress 2009- North America will have the opportunity to hear Mr. Pickens' proposals firsthand, ask him questions about the oilindustry issues, and hear details of his ideas for enhancing energy security.
Mr. Pickens is one of the most successful businessmen in the United States, first building the largest independent oil company in the country, Mesa Petroleum, and later reinventing himself in his 70s as one of the most successful investment fund operators with BP Capital, which manages US$4 billion.
In July 2008, Mr. Pickens launched the Pickens Plan (www.Pickens Plan.org), a grassroots campaign aimed at reducing U.S. oil imports. He is also aggressively pursuing a wide range of other business interests, from water marketing, alternative wind power and ranch development initiatives to Clean Energy, a clean transportation fuels company he founded and took public in May 2008 (the eighth entity he has helped go public in his career).
The U.S.-based business network CNBC has dubbed him the "Oracle of Oil" for his knack for predicting oil price movements. His many professional honors include membership in the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, the Texas Business Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. In 1998, the Oil & Gas Investor listed him as one of the "100 Most Influential People of the Petroleum Century." He was named one of the world's 100 most influential people of 2009 by Time magazine.
During his career, Mr. Pickens has made hundreds of millions of dollars - for others as well as himself - and given away nearly half a billion dollars to philanthropic causes.
