One of the challenges-and pleasures-of editing SAIL is deciding how each issue participates in the larger conversations of our field. Once manuscripts have been accepted for publication, we look at the queue and try to see how various submissions connect with one another. Balance, complementarity, and diversity (in subject, critical method, and text) are our guiding principles. Regarding essays, we encourage and, indeed, actively request scholarly articles on underrepresented texts and authors, as there are many Native voices - past and present - that are very much deserving of critical attention.
