Risky Business

Seven journalism shops combine forces to report on how industry is adaptingto climate change.

IN DECEMBER, a bunch of editors from The Atlantic, the Center for Investigative Reporting, Crist, Mother Jones, Slate, Wired, and the new pbs current-affairs show Need to Know got together for the first time. Four months later, we launched the Climate Desk, an innovative journalistic collaboration dedicated to covering the impact - human, environmental, economic, and political - of climate change. Our pilot project, "Risky Business," which launched on our websites just in time for Earth Day, focused on how industry is adapting to changing conditions - or not. We found a lot of worriers, a few innovators, and, sadly, ample evidence that most corporations are oblivious as to how to adapt their business model to the changing weather.

Still it was a tremendous and, we are happy to say, successful first step in an ongoing effort to join forces to improve the dialogue around climate change. …
