Gold Standard Multimedia, Inc. (GSM) has announced that it has recently published two new multimedia educational CDs in the field of medicine; both were developed by the Medical College of Georgia (MCG).
Essentials of Human Physiology
The first multimedia product is Essentials of Human Physiology, which is available on CD-ROM. This program provides teachers and students with a survey of the basic principles of human physiology and functional anatomy. The use of animations, videos, and sound files gives the new multimedia resource a cutting-edge approach to teaching and learning human physiology, according to the company.
Essentials of Human Physiology, which the company claims is the first fully integrated physiology courseware, contains 77 chapters organized into eight sections, more than 3,000 screens of comprehensive text, 1,800 supporting illustrations, 125 multimedia features, 32 correlative clinical cases, search capabilities, and an 850 question quiz bank.
"Our goal in creating this program was to present a sensory-rich learning resource that will not only make learning abstract concepts easier, but more enjoyable," said program editor Thomas Nosek.
Because Essentials of Human Physiology is a hyperlinked resource, the user can quickly navigate via "hot words" to remedial, advanced, or footnote material and to other sections within the program providing related information. Complex figures such as interactive graphs and tables can also be built by clicking on the links.
Adaptive testing questions are also linked to the text to test students' progress as they advance through the program. After each section, a self-exam is administered to test the students' understanding of the important physiological principles covered in that section. Explanations are given to the more than 850 questions and the appropriate text is linked for more detailed descriptions.
Physiological topics covered include muscle, cardiac and circulatory, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, membrane transport and bioelectric activity, endocrinology, and brain function. Thirtytwo correlative clinical cases help the student understand the clinical significance of the materials covered.
"Essentials of Human Physiology goes beyond books to deepen students' understanding of the subject," said Jon Seymour, chairman and president of GSM. "Although intended primarily for medical students, the program has a much wider audience. It's a perfect addition in our efforts to build a complete electronic medical curriculum."
Medical professors and teachers will find the program highly useful as a teaching aid. The Instructor's Resource portion of the institutional version contains standalone PowerPoint files containing all of the graphics, videos, animations, and sound without the supporting text so instructors can easily customize classroom presentations.
Essentials of Human Physiology will be priced at $99 for students and $850 for institutions. Site and multiple-copy licenses will also be available. …
