H.W. Wilson has announced its Wilson Biographies Plus, which the company claims is the first biographical database to offer profiles that feature hotlinks to new information as it is published in more than 4,000 periodicals. From an in-depth biographical profile, users can click to full-text articles, article abstracts, and index citations delivering the latest coverage, as reflected in 16 H.W. Wilson bibliographic databases.
Wilson Biographies Plus features some 46,000 profiles, and will grow by about 1,000 profiles per year. New profiles are added and links are updated each month.
"For libraries, the new database meets several important challenges associated with biographical reference-how to provide up-to-date material on subjects who continue to make headlines, how to deliver material on historical figures as new information comes to light, and how to provide a one-stop source for this biographical information that eliminates the runaround," said Michael Schulze, vice president of general reference.
Whether they're review excerpts of a new book written by or about the subject (as published in Book Review Digest); fulltext articles from popular magazines (as published in Readers' Guide Abstracts Full Text); or index, abstract, or full-text entries from art, business, or science specialty databases, links supplement the profiles to make for complete biographical packages in one stop, says H.W. Wilson.
The profiles themselves are generally written in-house by an editorial staff. …
