COUNT US IN!.
Vancouver-based WomenFutures has published a handbook on the ins and outs of women's community economic development. Entitled Counting Ourselves In, it approaches CED (community economic development) activities from a practical standpoint.
There is information on how and why women participate in CED initiatives like housing, financing alternatives, business development, research, advocacy, community development and organizing. It also presents ideas on facilitating workshops on CED and lists resources for getting started on women's CED in every province and territory in Canada.
Included are stories about CED activities. For example:
- LES CERCLES D'EMPRUNT DE MONTREAL (The Loan Circles) is designed to help women access small loans by making all the women in the circle co-signers to each member's loan. There are currently six circles involving 19 women and $10,000 in loans operating in Montreal.
- ENTRE NOUS FEMMES HOUSING SOCIETY in Vancouver provides low-cost, child-oriented housing for more than 250 single-parent families.
