In my Library I have every edition of the Who's Who in Music, dating back to 1935, which remain as useful as the early sets of The Grove Dictionary into which I dip from time to time. Needless to say every new edition gets bigger as more information is found and the world of music becomes busier and of greater importance. Now, thanks to Robert Elster and his team, Europa Press has published as comprehensive a pair of volumes as I imagine possible to amass, intelligently bound and easily organised, covering the whole world of music and musicians.
While it is obvious that these books are both necessary and invaluable to music academies, colleges, University Departments and similar organisations my opinion, having spent some fascinating hours just opening the pages at random, is that these pages are packed with cameos on individuals whose lives are largely devoted to playing, composing, writing about, publishing, teaching or administrating musical matters in places ranging from tiny hamlets and villages to grand capital cities.
The 8,000 Classical and 5,000 Popular entries give information on career, education, repertoire, compositions, recordings, publications, managements and those personal details which the entrant considers useful to potential professional …
