FARRAR, FREDERIC WILLIAM

1831–1903, English clergyman and author, dean of Canterbury (1895–1903), b. Bombay, India, educated in England. He was assistant master at Harrow from 1855 to 1870 and headmaster of Marlborough College from 1871 to 1876. In 1876 he was installed canon of Westminster and rector of St. Margaret's. He became archdeacon of Westminster in 1883 and dean of Canterbury in 1895. He was influential in the spread of the Broad Church movement. His writings cover a wide range, from school stories to Scripture commentaries and theological studies. His Life of Christ (1874) and Eternal Hope (1878) have passed through several editions.
