jûrˈmĭstən, city (1991 pop. 171,541), Gauteng, NE South Africa, on the Witwatersrand. The chief industries are gold mining and processing and the manufacture of liquid oxygen; other chemicals, machinery, textiles, and clothing are also produced. Germiston is South Africa's most important railroad hub.
