GÜNTHER, JOHANN CHRISTIAN

yōˈhän krĭsˈtyän, 1695–1723, German lyric poet. The young Goethe was inspired by the naturalness and vigor of Günther's verse. Among his remembered poems is the drinking song "Brothers, Let's Be Merry."
