both: äNrēˈ dü vĕrzhyāˈ kôNt də lä rôshzhäkəlăNˈ, 1772–94, French commander, leader of the counterrevolutionary army in the Vendée. His legendary gallantry and tactical abilities were of little avail against superior republican armies. He was killed in battle.
