LOUISE

ləwēzˈ, 1776–1810, queen of Prussia, consort of Frederick William III; a princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. During the Napoleonic Wars her patriotism and bravery won her lasting popularity. In 1807 she humiliated herself in vain at Tilsit before the French emperor, Napoleon I, begging him to lighten the peace terms for Prussia.

See biography by C. Wright (1969).
