RANCHI

ränˈchē, city (1991 pop. 614,795), capital of Jharkhand state, E central India. It is a district administrative center and a health resort, 2,128 ft (647 m) above sea level, in a region of tea plantations and rich coal deposits. There is an airport with connections to Calcutta and Delhi. The city houses one of the largest machine-tool factories in India, and the Univ. of Ranchi is there.
