SOGDIANA
| sŏgdēāˈnə, part of the ancient Persian Empire in central Asia between the Oxus and Jaxartes rivers, corresponding to the later emirate of Bukhara and region of Samarkand. Sogdiana, though often a possession of other countries, had its own language, culture, and trading centers. It was a satrapy under Darius I and was later invaded by Alexander the Great. ____________________The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition Copyright© 2004, Columbia University Press.
