SPINONE ITALIANO

spĭnōˈnē ĭtălēäˈnō, Ital. spēnôˈnā ētälyäˈnō, also called Italian pointer, breed of large, all-purpose hunting dog developed in the Piedmont district of NW Italy over three centuries ago. It stands from 20 to 26 in. (50.8–66.0 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs about 56 lb (25 kg). Its weather-resistant double coat consists of a smooth, dense underlayer and a short, hard, wiry topcoat. It may be solid white or white with light-brown or yellow patches. The Spinone is considered by many to be the best gundog of the various hunting breeds native to Italy. It is exhibited in the miscellaneous class at dog shows sanctioned by the American Kennel Club. See dog.
