STENNESS, LOCH OF

stĕnĕsˈ, lake on Mainland island, off N Scotland. An isthmus between Harray and Stenness lochs holds the Standing Stones of Stenness, two rings of flat tablets dating from before c.2500 b.c. One had 12 stones, of which 2 remain standing. The larger, the Ring of Brogar (or Brodgar), had approximately 60 stones, of which 20 remain standing.
