TROYES

trwä, city (1990 pop. 60,755), capital of Aube dept., NE France, on the Seine River. It is an industrial town. Hosiery is the main product. Troyes became an episcopal see in the 4th cent. and the capital of Champagne in the 11th cent. Its commercial importance was reflected in its annual fairs, which attracted merchants from throughout the known world. The fairs set standards of weights and measures for the whole of Europe, the troy weight having survived to this day. Troyes was the first town taken by Joan of Arc on her march to Reims. The city has some fine Gothic structures, including the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul (13th–16th cent.) and the Church of St. Urban (begun 1262).
