YSAŸE, EUGÈNE

özhĕnˈ ēzäēˈ, 1858–1931, Belgian violinist, considered one of the foremost violinists of his time; pupil of Wieniawski and Vieuxtemps. He became professor of music at the Brussels Conservatory in 1886. He made his American debut in 1894, and the following year he founded the Société des Concerts Ysaÿe, which he also conducted. He was conductor (1918–20) of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

See biography by A. Ysaÿe and B. Ratcliffe (1947).
