Laos - läˈōs, officially Lao People's Democratic Republic, republic (1995 est. pop. 4,250,000), 91,428 sq mi (236,800 sq km), SE Asia. A landlocked region, Laos is bordered by China on the north, by Vietnam on the east, by Cambodia on the south, and by Thailand and Myanmar on the west. The capital and largest city is Vientiane. The country is divided into 16 provinces.
