ABA Annual Convention Promises a Big Time in Texas

Article excerpt

They do things big in Texas, and so will ABA when its Annual Convention begins in San Antonio on Oct. 23. This year's event emphasizes three things: big issues; big ideas; and big impact.

The big issues and ideas will be propelled by the convention's three featured speakers: Tom Brokaw, author and former anchor and managing editor of the NBC Nightly News; Frank Keating, ABA president and CEO; and Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

In addition, Mark Olson, co-chairman of Treliant Risk Advisors and a former member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and a past ABA chairman, will moderate a panel discussion among leading bankers on "Decoding the Bank of the Future."

The convention offers something for everyone. The Director's Form, for example, will examine key issues for community bank boards of directors as well as provide numerous discussion and networking opportunities. General session topics will focus on the new regulatory and economic environment, a true tale of CEO succession, and the traits of high-performing banks.

The convention's Business Expo will feature the latest products and services to meet your compliance, growth and operational needs, plus the opportunity to return home a grand-prize winner with a "Painted Pony," a blue 2012 Ford Mustang.

Topics to be covered in Strategic Solutions Sessions will examine new technologies, Dodd-Frank Act implementation, social media, mobile banking, the branch evolution, and much more.

Of course, all of these activities are wrapped up in a city steeped in history and blended with a rich cultural heritage. From remembering the Alamo to taking in the famed River Walk, San Antonio offers a unique convention experience.

Swing a hammer for a Habitat home

Once again this year, the ABA Housing Partners Foundation is sponsoring the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home in the ABA Annual Convention host city.

The Habitat build in San Antonio will be the foundation's 11th. Overall, ABA members have contributed $1.9 million and dedicated more than 5,000 volunteer hours to Habitat for Humanity.

The Texas Bankers Association and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas are joining with the ABA Housing Partners Foundation to raise money and to fund the foundation's first build in the Southwest. The home will be constructed in Coleman Ridge, a new development that will be composed entirely of Habitat homes and include a newly built elementary school.
