Sing with All the Saints: Hymns and Liturgy Sung by the Children's Choirs of St. Paul's Lutheran Church Fort Wayne, Indiana

This is a collection of twenty-three selections from the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). The recording has a number of appealing characteristics. (1) All of the musical selections are sung in unison by the children's choir, which sings wonderfully on pitch, and are presented in a straightforward manner without elaborate arrangements that disguise the true beauty and effectiveness of the hymns and liturgical selections. (2) The choir sings with excellent articulation, hence, most of the texts are intelligible without reading them in the CD booklet. (3) Many of the hymns have diverse instrumental introductions, e.g. violin, cello, flute, trumpet, and all are accompanied by organ. There is, however, one delightfully refreshing moment on the recording at #21, "Baptismal waters cover me," with complete relief from all instrumentation, when the choir beautifully sings stanza 3 a cappella. (4) The organ generally does not overpower the singers. (5) The hymn selection is quite diverse and covers a wide range of liturgical themes of the church year, as well as the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion. (6) The selection of tunes is varied and not only is there a series of strophic hymns, there are excellent presentations of liturgical selections such as #11 "Let my prayer rise before you" from "Evening Prayer" in LSB and "Creator of the stars of night" with the superb translation of John Mason Neale sung to the ninth-century Sarum plainsong CONDITORALDE SIDERUM. …
