Editor's Letter

Dear readers,

I would like to take this opportunity to address two issues in this volume: forty five years of publishing our journal as well as the appointment of the new editorship.

Forty five years have passed since the first issue of Alcoholism was published and since then more than 550 scientific papers, preliminary communications, case reports, news and book reviews have been published in it. The journal was founded by Professor Vladimir Hudolin who was editor-in-chief for as many as 28 years. He wanted to establish an international, peer reviewed journal where experts from the area of alcoholism and related addictions could make their contribution by exchanging their experience and publishing new highlights, approaches and discoveries in the field. Originally, the journal was published in English, Italian, German and French, but this was soon changed and English was chosen as the main language of communication. The journal has been open to scientists from all over the world who deal with all aspects of human use and misuse of ethyl alcohol and other addictive substances.

The journal's activity was influenced by two other editors-in-chief: Professor Branko Lang, unfortunately very shortly (1993-1994), and Professor Vlatko Thaller (1995-2008). They both left a great mark on the journal. Prof. Thaller retired from Alcoholism after 13 years in the post. …
