Message from the President-Elect

Dear ACTFL Members:

Another outstanding convention is behind us; an exciting yearlong celebration begins. ACTFL and its member organizations have begun the kickoff to 2005: The Year of Languages. Never before in ACTFLs history have we had so much to anticipate coupled with the responsibilities of a high-visibility enterprise. This initiative affords us the opportunity to take center stage with events such as the internationally broadcast video conference-ACTFLs National Language Policy Summit: An American Plan for Action, January 10-11, 2005. The policy summit sets the tone for creating an American plan of action for world languages and their cultures. The domains of government, business, and academe will forge an alliance beginning at the policy summit that will carry on throughout the year to plan for the decade to come.

For each month of 2005: The Year of Languages, there is a designated theme that will help us highlight existing events in our schools and hometowns, as well as to assist us in initiating new ones. The suggested monthly foci are:

January Language Policy

February International Engagement

March Connecting Languages to Other Areas

April Higher Education

May Language Advocacy

June Adult Learning and Language Usage

July Languages and Communities

August Parents

September FIeritage Languages

October Early Language Learning

November Celebrating Accomplishments & Looking Ahead

December Culture
