In the fall of 2004, students were introduced to three new publications by McGraw-Hill's Higher Education. The authors of the three works made them compatible with the standard textbooks required for the Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Microbiology courses at Northwestern State University. These workbooks were composed jointly by the Biology instructor, Dr. Ray Kumar, and Sharon Lindsay, an undergraduate student pursuing her undergraduate degree in nursing.
The authors' intention was to help students better understand the material and make the large amount of information not seem too overwhelming. In fact the authors' state in each workbook that the publication was developed to help nursing students who are mostly single mothers working full-time. The workbooks were developed upon students commonly complaining, semester after semester, that the vast amount of information tends to discourage them. After studying everyday, students still found it difficult to remember and digest the information given in the tests and contained in the books.
By mere reading, the students say they begin to doze and soon fall asleep. The failure rates in the life sciences have continued to be quite high. The authors developed the study questions as a companion to reading the material and to keep the student on track; these questions were given to the students as homework and helped them understand the study matter after hearing the lecture in class. …
