Lee offers a rare eyewitness account of Korea's recent chaotic, and frequently violent journey to democracy. He offers informed observations on Korea's three famous Kims and Roh Tae-woo, and of the dramatic political events leading to the presidential election in December 1987 and the parliamentary elections in April 1988. Lee also examines the formation of a super-ruling party. Readers will benefit from Lee's presence in the offices of the presidential candidates and from his conversations with leaders directly responsible for the fate of Korean democracy. Knowing what happened in Korean politics during the past three years is prerequisite to understanding the decline of Korea's repressive authoritarian system.

East and Southeast Asia is a fertile setting for exploring the links between political and economic development, Economic performance has been a primary source of political legitimacy in all the states in the study, despite moves to democracy in the early 1990s, yet the levels of developments vary markedly. Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore have turned to technological innovation, while the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia have focused on regional/global production systems. Outcomes after the financial crisis of the late 1990s will be determined by the capacity of political systems to sustain popular support, and by the capacity of institutions to rework dysfunctional economic arrangements.

The broad conclusions here are that "East Asia" is useful as a unit of political and economic analysis, that there are many varieties of "modernization" of which the Western model is only one, and that processes of modernization are best understood in pluridisciplinary, regional, and global perspectives. The volume especially focuses on the interaction between nations of East Asia; the advantages and limits of export-led growth; and the interactions between such processes as state formation, industrial growth, urbanization, and movement from status- to class-based social hierarchies. Relations between state, market, and civic culture are also explored.

With contributions by leading authorities on the security and political economy of East Asia, this volume examines the implications of the profound strategic and economic transformations in the region since the demise of the Soviet Union ended Cold War polarization and the emergence of new East Asian economic powers transformed regional economic relations. By studying the implications of these strategic and economic transformations for the interests of the great powers and key local powers and for the maintenance of regional stability, the contributors ponder how the changing relations among these states might evolve into a new regional order characterized by extensive stability and cooperation. By so doing, they consider potential sources of instability, including changes in domestic politics and enduring bilateral conflicts of interests, and the importance of developing creative bilateral policies and of maximizing the contribution of multilateral institutions in mitigating the impact of these factors on regional security.
