ALCTS Plans Ahead to 2011

The ALA Ahead to 2010 planning efforthas identified six draft goal areas, which will greatly influence the direction of the Association over the next five years. In light of this effort, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services has delayed its own planning cycle by one year in order to more directly link its own goals to those of ALA.

Advocacy

ALCTS is not often aligned with advocacy efforts as advocacy has been defined. However, advocacy is an important component for much that the division stands for. The ALCTS Preservation Section wrote the ALA Preservation Policy and our members continue to advocate for the preservation of collections in all formats, particularly digitization, and proactively inform and influence the many areas in which ALCTS has an interest.

Education

ALCTS has a strong commitment to education through its publications. During the 2004 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston, the division cosponsored a workshop on integrating cataloging into library school curricula. Our continuing education program includes preservation, cataloging, internet resources, and acquisitions--both face-to-face and via the Web. ALCTS is also developing educational programs as well as publications for library support. The division's publishing efforts seek to bring best-practices information to a broad audience.

Public policy

The division's contributions at the international level lie primarily within the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. …
