It has just been announced that Jonathan Watkins, director of Birmingham's Ikon Gallery, has been appointed as curator of the Shanghai Biennale 2006--the most important international biennale in Asia attracting over a million visitors. This year, its theme will be 'Hyper Design', focusing on the relationship between art, utility and design. Opening on September 5, the Biennale will take place at the Shanghai Art Museum and satellite locations across the entire city. Watkins joins a curatorial team of six headed by artistic director Zhang Qing (Shanghai Art Museum)--Huang Du (independent curator), Shu-Min Lin (independent curator), Wonil Rhee (Media City Seoul, Korea), Xiao Xiaolan (Shanghai Art Museum) and Gianfranco Maraniello (Galleria D'arte Moderna, Bologna).

Among the many biennales current this month around the world, opening on February 19 is the 5th Liege International Biennial of Photography and Visual Art, which this year focuses on Brazil. The festival will present more than 15 exhibitions occupying the entire premises of the Liege Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art as well as the Old Church of St Andrew, B9 at the St Luke Fine Arts Institute, Les Brasseurs, Liege University and various cultural centres and commercial galleries. …
