FIFTEEN Influential Education Studies & Reports

The following 15 studies and reports, arranged chronologically, have been a barometer to measure the successes and failures in the nation's educational system. While not a comprehensive list, these represent some of the best research efforts to make a positive impact for change in educational performance, recruitment and retention, and access and equity.

1. The Traditionally Black Institutions of Higher Education 1860-1982, National Center for Education Statistics. Later known as historically Black colleges and universities, the first incarnation of the NCES study, published in 1984, featured historical facts about HBCUs and some institutional data. Now the study, which is published sporadically, features degree attainment, enrollment, revenue and salary figures.

2. The Status Report on Minorities in Higher Education, American Council on Education. The annual report from the council's Office of Minorities in Higher Education founded in 1987.

3. Building Communities: A Vision for A New Century, Commission on the Future of Community Colleges. Released in 1988, this report called on the nations 1,250 community, junior and technical colleges to strive to become sources for civic, cultural, and educational renewal.

4. Teaching Mathematics to a Changing Population: The Professional Development Program at the University of California, Berkeley, Philip Uri Treisman. Colleges and universities around the country are copying the recipe for successful African American mathematics scholars laid out in this 1988 study, published by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences.

5. Teacher Education Pipeline: Schools, Colleges, and Departments of Education Enrollments by Race/Ethnicity, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. AACTE released its first study of minority enrollment in teacher education programs, the first report of its kind, in 1989.

6. NCAA Graduation-Ram Report, National Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1990, the NCAA adopted its own resolution to disclose publicly admission and graduation rates of student athletes at its member institutions. This annual report, first published in 1992, is the result.

7. Redeeming the American Promise and Miles to Go, the Southern Education Foundation. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on United States v. Fordice in 1992, the foundation convened the Panel on Educational Opportunity and Postsecondary Desegregation to study and quantify racial inequity in higher education in southern states, then offer educational practices to reverse the legacy of de jure segregation.
