Strength in Chapters

The international reach of ASIS continues to expand. The Society now has 48 chapters outside of the United States, spanning the globe from Ecuador--one of the newest--to the Middle East. Representatives from one such group, the 150-member Mexico chapter, recently paid a visit to headquarters to share ideas, gather information, and relate news of their chapter's activities.

The delegation included Chapter Chairman Jorge Septien, Admission Committee Chairman Thomas Gottlieb, and Fundraising Committee Chairman Richard Wright. One major project that the chapter has been involved with is an effort to create security industry standards (called "norms") for various security sector jobs, such as alarm installation, for example.

Currently, one problem in Mexico, explains Septien, is "a lack of professionalism." The norms are intended to address that concern.

To accomplish their goal they are working with an organization in Mexico that establishes standards and certification procedures for other industries. To date, the chapter has completed four norms covering access control, dog handling, alarm installations, and personal protection.

The project will raise the level of professionalism over time, says Wright, because once the norm exists for a certain type of security job, companies will want to certify their employees to make their services more salable, and clients will want to hire certified security personnel who "actually know what they are doing." The chapter plans to become a certifying organization for the security-related norms.

Also related to the effort to increase professionalism among practitioners in Mexico, the chapter is running a 170-hour CPP-preparation course for persons interested in taking the exam. Many of those students are expected to sit for the exam this month in Orlando at the ASIS 46th Annual Seminar and Exhibits.

Another of the chapter's most recent accomplishments is the debut of its Web page (www.asis.org.mx), which was designed by members Jaime Oliva, Sr. and Jaime Oliva, Jr. …
