UMI Introduces General Periodicals OnDisc

UMI (University Microfilms International) has just introduced a new CD-ROM database that retrieves images of articles from general-reference periodicals. The introduction was made at the American Library Association Mid-winter Meeting last month.

The database, General Periodicals Ondisc, will allow users to search UMI's Periodical Abstracts index disc and retrieve copies of cited articles. Like Business Periodicals Ondisc (BPO), UMI's flagship image database, the new database will provide access to articles just as they appear in the original publication, complete with photos, charts, graphs, maps and other graphic elements. Initially, the database will contain more than 150 general-reference titles such as Time, U.S. News & World Report, The Economist, Science News, Phi Delta Kappan, and Vital Speeches.

The new database will bring one-stop search and retrieval capabilities to users who need to research general topics, everything from child care and national health insurance to the state of the U.S. educational system, third-world politics, and other topical issues. Broad title coverage will make General Periodicals Ondisc appropriate for libraries with a wide cross-section of users. …
