When the staff of Techniques was planning the editorial calendar for this publishing year, we could never have imagined the events that would occur in September. We were in the middle of preparing a major career focus article on aviation when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. And for our April issue, we had scheduled a cover story on one of the hardest-hit industries following the September 11 terrorist attacks-hospitality, which includes restaurants, lodging, and travel and tourism.

Lori Crockett's article discusses the recovery plan for the hospitality industry, but it is focused on the "Real-World Training to Meet a Growing Demand." Despite the recession and the attacks on our country, the hospitality industry still expects major growth over the next decade that will require a well-trained workforce, and a number of career and technical education programs are successfully preparing those workers to serve. Among these programs are Trumbull Career and Technical Center and Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development-both in Ohio-the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Niagara University, and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. …
