Lightweight Precision Jib

Birns and Sawyer, Inc. announces the introduction of the Porta-Jib, a new, lightweight precision tool. Designed to fit on any Mitchell top or IOOmm ball tripod, it is a reliable front-operated jib.

Even though it can support a payload of up to 90 pounds, the entire assembly weighs only 46 pounds (without counterweights), and breaks down to fitintoa9''x16''x38'' transport case. The Porta-Jib is easily assembled or disassembled by one man without tools in under five minutes.

Other features of the Porta-Jib include a smooth six feet of boom travel, adjustable slip clutches on both boom and pan axes, and precision ball bearings on all moving parts. The boom end features double sided Mitchell plates to directly accommodate either standard or underslung heads. All the parts of the Porta-Jib are precision machined stainless steel or anodized aluminum.

Several optional accessories are available, including: various tripods, additional counterweights, safety locking arm, and ATA hard shell shipping cases.

Show-Biz Prepares

Live Time, Inc., producer of the eighth annual ShowBiz Expo West and the debuting ShowBiz Expo East, announces Scott Ross, of LucasArts Entertainment Company will be this year's ShowBiz Expo West keynote speaker.

Ross' address, entitled "New Technologies: Special Effects - the Future of Digital Technology," takes place on Saturday, June 8, at the Los Angeles Convention Center beginning at 1:30pm and will include a sample showing of special effects from Industrial Light & Magic. Ross is a vice president of LucasArts Entertainment, which encompasses the Industrial Light & Magic visual effects studio; the live-action television production company, Lucasfilm Commercial Productions; LucasArts Attractions, a division specializing in the conception, design, production and installation of attractions for theme parks and other specialty venues; and the Skywalker Group, a post production division which offers sound design and mixing production services, Soundroid and Editdroid.

The conference program for ShowBiz Expo will include such topics as: "Directing Your First Feature," hosted by Directors Guild of America; and The secrets of second Unit Photography," moderated by Jack Cooperman, ASC. A special seminar on "Art Direction" will be presented by UCLA's Extension Program; the IWA will host "Opportunities In The Corporate Video Marketplace;" a seminar on "Women Below-The-Line In Production" will be hosted by Behind The Lens, an association for professional camerawomen; and Dov S-S Simens will present a special workshop on "Making Low Budget Features." Monochrome CCTV Camera

The new CX-500 low cost, low power, compact 1/3'' monochrome chip camera for CCTV applications can perform either as a systems camera or as a stand alone unit. It is now available for delivery from Chinon America's Industrial Products Division.

One version of Chinon's CX-500 features line lock operation with vertical phase adjustment and power requirements of just 1 w from a 24 VAC source. This combination makes it an easy, low-cost addition to any security camera system. Another version of the CX-500 comes with power requirements of just 0.55 w from a 12 VDC power source, making it an equally effective, low-cost stand alone unit.

Both versions use a 1/3'' MOS type solid-state imaging device, a chip size that promises to become the next industry standard for chip cameras. It delivers a sharp resolution of 230 x 240 TV lines and a pixel count of 80,000 elements. Moreover, automatic gain control (internal set, selectable and adjustable) ensures high-quality images. …
