Ovid Technologies, Inc. a provider of electronic medical, technical, and scientific information, has announced a licensing agreement with Harcourt, Inc. to offer electronic full-text versions of several key clinical textbooks and journals published by the Harcourt-owned W.B. Saunders, Mosby, and Churchill Livingstone imprints. Ovid has also announced the release of Clinical Evidence, a searchable electronic database of clinical questions and evidence-based answers produced by the BMJ Publishing Group, publishers of the British Medical Journal.

Ovid, Harcourt

The agreement with Harcourt comes as part of a larger transaction whereby Ovid parent company Wolters Kluwer has sold its one-third interest in MD Consult, a Web-based clinical information service, to Harcourt.

The Harcourt textbooks and journals will be added to the Books@Ovid and Journals @Ovid full-text databases this summer.

"We are pleased to enhance our extensive online clinical medicine and research platform with these important titles," said Debbie Hull, president and CEO of Ovid Technologies. "These additions support our commitment to providing our millions of users with easy access to the most comprehensive database of clinical research available."

With over 5,000 institutional customers worldwide, including hospitals, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, and others that together provide information services to over 2.5 million clinicians, students, and professionals, Ovid is the world's leading online clinical medicine and research platform, according to the company. Well known in the electronic information industry for its advanced search-and-retrieval technology and seamless integration between resources, Ovid currently provides 8.5 million links between bibliographic and full-text resources.

The Books@Ovid database includes electronic versions of several important and trusted reference textbooks from publishers such as Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and McGraw-Hill. The database is growing rapidly, with nearly 100 titles under license. With a focus on medical, nursing, and drug-related content, Books@ Ovid aggregates and delivers to the desktop texts from different publishers under a single search engine and Web interface to search, retrieve, browse, and display book content.

Journals@Ovid is one of the largest single-database aggregations of searchable SGML scientific, technical, and medical full-text journals in the world. Growing rapidly with the addition of newly licensed content, the database currently contains the complete electronic full text and images of almost 40 full-text journal titles from over 60 publishers.
