Tas Pide

The George Inn 20-22 New Globe Walk, SE1 (020-7928 3300). Mon-Sun [pounds sterling]50 .

Tas is a group of three good-value Turkish restaurants in SE1 - in the Cut, in Borough High Street and this, the newest, with the best location close to the Thames, where a wood-fired oven turns out the pukka, pasha, boat-shaped kind of pizza known as pide. We went to Tas Pide after seeing Jerry Springer - The Opera at the National Theatre. It needed a bottle of white Doluca Turkish wine and then later a bottle of organic Sicilian red to take the bad taste out of our mouths. A guitarist played gently in one corner and staff were efficient, sweet and obliging. Mercimek, red lentil soup, was brought as a complimentary starter. After that, good meze included fried mussels on skewers, parsley salad, prawns in tomato sauce and sucuk (grilled spicy sausage). A pide I strongly recommend is pastirmali with cured beef.

Have the optional egg on it.

Le Pont De La Tour

Butler's Wharf, 36D Shad Thames, SE1 (020-7403 8403).

Mon-Sun [pounds sterling]130 ..

This sleek, expensive Conran restaurant launched the Butler's Wharf 'gastrodrome', which has added significantly to the sum of South Bank gastronomy. A new chef, Martin Caws, who cooked at the Oak Room, Pied a Terre and Mirabelle, has recently taken over. The original Bibendum/Simon Hopkinson influence on the menu may now be somewhat Marco Pierre Whitened. However, you can still enjoy the sort of straightforward food that Sir Terence espouses, maybe starting with a dozen oysters and moving on to rack of Limousin veal, then a consultation with the cheese board. Caws has updated the Bar & Grill menu offered at an affordable [pounds sterling]12.95/[pounds sterling]15.95 for two/three courses. If it's a pretty day and you secure a table on the wide terrace with a view of Tower Bridge, that is an even better garnish to a grilled Barnsley chop than the minted new potatoes suggested.

Delfina Studio Cafe

50 Bermondsey Street, SE1 (020-7357 0244). Mon-Fri (lunch only) [pounds sterling]70 ..

The opening of Tate Modern came quite a while after this studio space for artists, supported by patron Delfina Entrecanales, was created within a former chocolate factory. The cafe for resident artists expanded into a lunchtime restaurant and evening function space and its success supports the whole praiseworthy endeavour (artists still eat for [pounds sterling]1). Unsurprisingly, the white dining room resembles a gallery. …
