Cartoon wizard Danny Roberts is feeling just Dandy after putting young artists around the country in the shade with his comic strips.

The 11-year-old has reached the final stages of a nationwide search for the best young cartoonist by comic giants Beano and Dandy.

Impressed judges voted his `Bunnyville' strip about his pet rabbit, Snoopy, as one of the best out of thousands of entries. Now he has been invited to the semi-finals to battle it out with other youngsters around the country.

Danny, of Ormsby Green, Slatyford, Newcastle, said: "I read Beano every week and the winner gets to go to work with the artists on Beano and Dandy so I really hope I can win.

"I got a phone call saying I was in the semi-finals. We'll get to meet the artists from Beano and Dandy and I can't wait.

"I've got thousands of Beanos and Dandys and it would be great if I could actually get some of my cartoons in there."

The competition was organised by Capri-Sun in conjunction with the Beano and Dandy in a bid to find the UK's best young cartoonist.

Danny beat off stiff competition for the chance to join 14 other talented cartoonists at Edinburgh Zoo on August 4.

In a bid to see their cartoon creations printed within the Beano and Dandy, plus enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to the comics' HQ to watch their cartoon strip roll off the presses, 75 budding young artists from across the UK have been chosen to attend one of five events.

They will be shown the art of professional comic strip creation by Beano and Dandy expert cartoonists and have the chance to submit a second cartoon drawing as they compete for the ultimate title of UK's Best Young Cartoonist 2003. …
