THE FA CUP Final could be played on a Wednesday at the end of next season under controversial plans revealed today.

Senior FA officials believe the switch - set to infuriate supporters - will give England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson the four-week break he wants before the World Cup Finals in Germany.

The FA's move is made even more bold in the light of their decision to pencil in the showpiece occasion as the inaugural game at the new [pounds sterling]757 million Wembley stadium.

Wembley officials are confident of being able to sell all 90,000 seats, whatever the results of the ongoing discussions.

The FA has also been assured that television revenue will not be affected.

But chiefs at Soho Square, the FA's headquarters, are bracing themselves for a fierce backlash from supporters, Uefa and police who are believed to be against plans to move the final, which has been played on a Saturday since its inception in 1872. …
