Fresh look for neighbourhood

Multi-million plans to bulldoze a rundown Tyneside shopping centre and regenerate the neighbourhood were unveiled today.

The long-awaited proposals for Newcastle's Newbiggin Hall estate come after previous plans fell through and council chiefs went back to the drawing board.

The new scheme for a neighbourhood centre will replace the existing shopping centre and provide the whole area with a major facelift.

As well as new shops, there will be new buildings for council services, including library, housing office, social services and customer centre.

Plans also include a new medical centre with a GP surgery and dentist and improved community facilities.

The proposals were due to be discussed at a meeting of the council's executive today and a brief will be prepared for would-be developers. …
