SPELLING BEE CHAMP CUTS THROUGH 'BUREAUCRACY'

Kaela Mananquil is the Duval County spelling bee champion for the second straight year.

The James Weldon Johnson Middle School eighth-grader won the 2006 contest Thursday by spelling "bureaucracy."

She will now compete in a regional bee on Feb. 25 at the Florida Theatre against winners from 14 other counties in the area. That winner heads to Washington for the 78th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee May 31 to June 2

Chris Judge, a sixth-grader at Twin Lakes Academy Middle School, was the runner-up in the Duval bee.

DANCE COMPETITION SET AT JACKSONVILLE UNIVERSITY

The North Florida chapter of the National Society of Arts & Letters will have its dance competition Saturday, March 18, at Jacksonville University.

Cash prizes are $1,500, $1,000 and $750. The winner will have expenses paid to take part in the national competition, where 23 finalists will compete for $10,000.
