Child Abuse Prevention Conference Set

The First Coast Family Center, which serves Clay and four other Northeast Florida counties, is offering 25 parent scholarships to an upcoming child abuse prevention conference.

The April 3-4 conference will be held at the University of North Florida. Full conference registration is $140, but the scholarships will provide free admission the first day for parents interested in safeguarding children from abuse, on-line predators and other forms of maltreatment.

"The Parent Scholarship is intended for parents in the community who are neighborhood leaders -- those individuals who are sought by families and children for guidance or support," said Julie Besley, program director of Parenting Partners, a First Coast Family Center program that works to unite parents with local parenting enrichment activities.

Neighborhood leaders include building captains in apartment communities, Sunday school teachers, residents focused on helping local families, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders, grandparents raising grandchildren, mentors and volunteers. …
