PUGNACIOUS New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was today clinging to officeafter arranging a tryst with a prostitute from an international callgirl ring.
Mr Spitzer, a Democrat who is married with three teenage daughters, hasadmitted involvement with the Emperors Club VIP escort service, based inWashington DC.
The former New York State attorneygeneral was today facing up to America'sbiggest political sex scandal since Bill Clinton's affair with intern MonicaLewinsky 10 years ago.
The Empire State governor reportedly paid $4,300 for a night with a prostitutefrom the Emperors Club, which supplies what its website referred to as "fashionmodels, pageant winners and exquisite students". The club, which also offeredservices in London, is now the subject of a federal affidavit.
It claims that Spitzer, 48, allegedly referred to as "Client 9" in thedocument, met a prostitute on 13 February in a Washington hotel room. Thedocument hinted that Client 9 is a regular with the Emperors Club.
Spitzer reportedly used the name of his friend and donor George Fox as analias. The scandal has led to widespread claims of hypocrisy as Spitzer madecleaning up ethics central to his election as governor in 2006. But despiteintense pressure to quit, he has yet to resign.
Spitzer apologised to his wife and daughters in a televised broadcast. He said:"I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violatesmy, or any sense, of right and wrong.
"I apologise first and most importantly to my family. I apologise to the publicwhom I promised better. …
