The Jacksonville Association of Fire Fighters is hosting a charity banquet Friday in Riverside for Empowered Parents, a nonprofit program that assists parents of troubled children.

"A Night of Firehouse Cooking" will kick off at 6 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. at Jacksonville Firefighter Hall, 625 Stockton St.

Tickets are $35 each, or $300 for a table for 10.

TEACHER RECOGNIZED

John Slate, the aviation teacher at Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology on Wilson Boulevard, was recognized at a recent Duval County School Board meeting for being named the 2007-08 Teacher of the Year by the Westside Kiwanis Foundation.

END-OF-SUMMER PARTY
