2 Arrests Made in July Violent-Crime Spree; Pair Is Charged in Two Slayings That Occurred on the Same Day

It was one of the bloodiest days in recent memory in Jacksonville and police now say they know who was partly responsible.

Police said Tuesday they have arrested a second man in a July 20 slaying and the pair are now charged in another homicide the same day.

The killings occurred on a Sunday filled with violence that saw four people slain in the city, including a shooting by police. A stabbing victim also died a couple of days later. The killings led Mayor John Peyton and Sheriff John Rutherford to hold a joint news conference the next day to condemn the surge in violence.

The first victim, 39-year-old Patrick Stafford, was fatally shot in a relative's front yard about 6 a.m. in the 1600 block of Academy Street. The shooting occurred during a robbery attempt, an arrest docket said.

A few hours later, a carjacking occurred nearby at Tyler and Beaver streets. That was followed by the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Monquell Wimberly as he rode his bike a few blocks away on King Street. Police said shots fired in the drive-by shooting of Wimberly came from a car matching the description of the carjacked vehicle.
