COMMISSIONER TO LEAD LITTER ROUNDUP

County Commissioner Jimmy Anderson will lead the Keep Baker Beautiful campaign's first litter roundup Saturday. The event will be from 8 a.m. until noon beginning at Heritage Park in Macclenny. The county will supply bags and vests for volunteers to pick up trash along Lowder Street. The first of what Anderson hopes will be monthly events is being sponsored by the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he said. Anderson plans to supply the water. GREEN COVE SPRINGS SENIOR CENTER TO OPEN

The new $3.9 million Council on Aging of Clay County Inc. center in Green Cove Springs will open with a dedication and ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Friday. The 26,000-square-foot Clayton and Mildred Revels Senior Center at 604 Walnut St., houses multiple activity rooms, a large dining room and plenty of office space for officials who oversee the various services available to Clay County seniors, said Al Rizer, council executive director. The project began in May 2010 with the architectural design work, while the groundbreaking was in September 2011, Rizer said. Clay County provided about $2.1 million for the project, County Manager Stephanie Kopelousos said.

TAXPAYERS HIT WITH LAW BILL OF $6,902

Taxpayers will foot a $6,902 bill from the county school district's labor law firm for its opinion that the School Board didn't have the authority to rewrite the job description for a director's position. Superintendent Charlie Van Zant Jr. asked for the opinion from Fowler White, which has charged the district $87,074 for its work on various matters from July 1, 2012-March 31. Van Zant has hired a private attorney to sue the board over the rewrite. Taxpayers will have to pay legal fees for Van Zant and the board's roles in the suit, which could cost more than $100,000. …
