Youth Risk Behavior Survey; BULLYING, SUICIDE INCREASE AS ISSUES

Bullying has risen in Duval County middle and high schools in the past two years, and so has the percentage of middle school students who considered or attempted suicide. Those findings are included in the third biennial Youth Risk Behavior Survey to be released Thursday.

Conducted in spring 2013, the survey looked at alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues, violence, suicide and safety behaviors, sexual behavior and physical activity and dietary behavior. Duval County Public Schools and the county Health Department collaborated to gauge teen attitudes and experiences.

ZONE 1

Urban Core: Reports of bullying at school, and suicide attempts by middle schoolers up. More high school students reported bullying at school. Fewer attempted suicide. Fewer middle and high students fought at school. Marijuana use is down in middle schools and up among high school students. Fewer middle and high school students are having intercourse.

ZONE 2

Greater Arlington Area: Fewer middle school students using alcohol. More high school students using marijuana. More middle school fights but fewer at high school level. More middle and high school students vomit or use laxatives to lose weight. More high and middle school students play video games more than 3 hours a day. Fewer students have sexual intercourse.

ZONE 3

Southeast: Bullying on campus jumped significantly in middle schools but remained the same at high schools. Reported suicide attempts increased among middle and high school students. Fewer middle and high school students used tobacco and alcohol, but more smoked marijuana. More high school students said they were forced to have intercourse.

ZONE 4

Southwest: Fewer middle school students were having intercourse but more high school students were. Fewer high school students said they were forced to have intercourse. Fewer middle and high school students were using tobacco or drinking alcohol. Bullying was up at both grade levels. Fewer high school students attempted suicide. No change among middle school students.

ZONE 5

Portions of North and Westside: Have the most middle school students fighting at school. More middle school students are having intercourse while fewer high school students are doing it. More at both grade levels play video games more than 3 hours a day. Tobacco use dropped but alcohol and marijuana use is up among middle school students. It's down at high schools.

ZONE 6

Beaches: Nearly 1 in 6 middle school students has had intercourse. The number of high school students having intercourse has dropped, as have those who said they were forced to have intercourse. More middle and high school students vomit or use laxatives to lose weight. Fewer middle school students use pot. Suicide attempts are up at both grade levels.
