TURKEY reached the second round of the World Cup for the first time in their history today following a comfortable victory over China.

The Turks, with one eye on Brazil's game against Costa Rica in Suwon, were always likely to win against a Chinese team whose sole ambition at these finals has been to return home with a goal.

Going into the match Turkey knew they needed to beat the Chinese by two goals and hope the Brazilians won by the same margin.

At one point during the second half, with the Turks strolling victory, the Costa Ricans rattled Turkish nerves by pulling Brazil back to 3-2.

But it was only a brief scare. Turkey added a third goal while Brazil went on to win 5-2.

All of which means Turkey will next week step into the previously uncharted territory of the last 16 on their first appearance at a World Cup finals for 48 years.

Already bearing the massive pressure of their fanatical support, the Turks will now, more than likely, have the extra headache of a second round showdown with cohosts Japan next Tuesday. …
