County's Financial Reporting Recognized for Excellence

One of the most important, yet perhaps least noticed projects completed each year by the county clerk's office is the County's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, or CAFR. For the past six years, our CAFR has been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association with its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

While this award may not attract big headlines, receiving it sends an important message to anyone having an interest in the county's finances that our reporting is of high quality and fairly presents the county's financial condition.

The Government Finance Officers Association was founded in 1906 as a professional service organization for state and local finance officers. With nearly 15,000 members in the United States and Canada, GFOA works to promote sound governmental financial management practices through educational programs, professional certifications, various publications, and its awards program. Currently, GFOA's awards program recognizes excellence in the areas of governmental budgeting, financial reporting, and other projects demonstrating innovation in financial management.

The award for Excellence in Financial Reporting is regarded as the premier form of recognition in the public finance profession. Receiving and maintaining the award is certainly no easy task, as each annual report is subjected to thorough scrutiny by GFOA reviewers for adherence to GFOA high standards of financial reporting.
